Houston, Texas – Mann Austin Hayes, 21, was arrested and is charged with murder in the death of his ex-girlfriend Julie De La Garza, 20, who was shot in the head on October 18 in the afternoon.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez reported that Hayes had been taken into custody without incident and was to be charged with murder.
Police have been searching for this suspect since the Oct. 18 incident near the Spring Cypress and Northwest Fwy, northwest of Houston.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office reported that De La Garza was traveling with his current partner in a vehicle. Apparently, the suspect was following them and that was when he shot him through the rear window of the truck and hit the victim’s head.
The young woman was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital in critical condition but hours later died from a head injury. Harris County officials were investigating the incident and discovered that Hayes’ vehicle, a white Toyota, had been parked in a business complex located between Skinner and Northwest Fwy.
Although he was initially charged with aggravated assault, after the victim’s death the charge was raised to murder.
