Houston, Texas – The former world boxing champion, Juan Diaz mourned the death of his former coach, Willie Savannah, who ceased to exist at the age of 85.

Savannah owned the Savannah Boxing Club boxing gym located in southwest Houston. From there other athletes such as Ronnie Shields and the twins Charlo, Jermall and Jermell emerged.

“It is very strong for me because Lord Willie Savannah was like a father to me. From the age of 8 that I entered his gym, he raised me, helped me, and guided my career and my life in a very good way, “said Juan Díaz in an interview with Noticias 45.

When asked what he missed most about Savannah, Díaz said that, for each training, Savannah cooked beans with chicken because he said that beans gave energy and protein to get ahead.

“It is a great pain For me, having lost such a beautiful person, who gave everything to help people, and that is what I will miss a lot about him, ”said Díaz.

Díaz, who was a world champion in three different categories, stated that Willie Savannah was the head of the team and he was the one who kept them together.

“It is a great loss for the Houston community and for all those who trained in its gym,” added the athlete.
