Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Neighbors in the Point Breeze section of Philadelphia are shocked after two people were killed in a fire overnight, a mother and a son.

A third victim, allegedly the woman’s daughter, was taken to hospital for injuries. The fire broke out around 12:45 a.m. Wednesday in the 2200 block of Pierce Street.

Authorities confirmed that the fire started on the first floor and firefighters were able to bring those flames under control in just 30 minutes. But they had to rescue three people inside. Two of them were found on the first floor and the other person upstairs.

Police say the mother and son died at Jefferson Hospital. A 12-year-old girl was taken to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in stable condition.

He has yet to reveal the identities of the mother and son. The fire spread to the house next door, the neighbors were evacuated.

The news shocked neighbors, who say the woman was known for handing out lunches to neighborhood children during the summer. Neighbor Asha Downing just saw her hours before the fire.

“She came and was joking with my children and playing with them. Two hours later, this was happening,” Downing told 6 ABC.

“I heard a lot of broken glass and you know, people yelling, ‘You have to go back,’ and I jumped,” Downing said. “I didn’t know what was going on, so I tried to get my kids out of the house. And finding out that it was them is extremely devastating because I know them and, as I said, they’re really kind, good people.”
