Braun Strowman has defeated Shinsuke Nakamura in the latest edition of WWE SmackDown to win the WWE Intercontinental Championship. Therefore, Strowman captures his first individual championship, ending Shinsuke Nakamura’s reign after 202 days of reign and three successful starting defenses.
After a fast and controversial fight that has been full of interventions by Sami Zayn and Cesaro, Strowman has won the victory by three after beating Nakamura with an exposed ring tensioner and a Running Powerslam. In the central part of the match, Sami Zayn unprotected the ring tensioner illegally, causing Nakamura to hit him with his face in the final stages, leaving the new champion to victory.
Shinsuke Nakamura won the Intercontinental Championship over Finn Bálor on July 14 in the Extreme Rules Kickoff, being rarely defended since then. The last time Nakamura defended the Intercontinental Championship on October 18, 2019, exactly 106 days ago. Despite its recent inactivity, the championship underwent a redesign that was presented during SmackDown on November 22 last year.
