Shingo Takagi becomes new NEVER Openweight champion

New NEVER Openweight champion in New Japan Pro WrestlingShingo Takagi, the member of The Ungovernables of Japan, has taken the title after beating Hirooki Goto, in the stellar fight of the first-night event of The New Beginning in Sapporo.

This is the second championship that Takagi achieves in less than a month in New Japan since he was proclaimed NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Champion, along with BUSHI and EVIL, on the second night of Wrestle Kingdom 14.

It is worth mentioning that this was Hirooki Goto’s first defense after he managed to win the NEVER Openweight championship by defeating KENTA, during the second date of Wrestle Kingdom 14.

Goto and Takagi began their rivalry during Climax G1 last year, where Takagi defeated Goto. After seeing each other’s faces in several team fights, in the Destruction in Kobe event they met again in an individual fight in which Goto won the victory.

After Wrestle Kingdom 14, during the New Year’s Dash eventShingo Takagi defeated Hirooki Goto in a tag team match and after that challenged Goto to a match for the NEVER Openweight championship.

Also, as a curiosity, with this victory over Hirooki Goto, Shingo Takagi joins the IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental champion, and leader of The Ungovernables of Japan,  Tetsuya Naito, as the only two superstars in NJPW who carry more than one title at a time.
