President of UFC, Dana White, reiterated that he was dismissing Khabib Nurmagomedov. Conor McGregor 2 in the near future.
McGregor will make his return to the Octagon on January 18 against Donald Cerrone. Exactly three months later, Nurmagomedov will defend his UFC lightweight title against Tony Ferguson. If McGregor and Nurmagomedov come out victorious in those fights, the rematch could be the next move.
White was interviewed by BT Sport to discuss a number of topics. One of them was in which direction the UFC takes following McGregor. Cerrone and Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson
“If Conor can get through” Cowboy “and Khabib can beat Tony, then we’ll see a rematch with Conor and Khabib on the line very soon, Dana White Said.”
Dana confirmed that McGregor’s return is cemented for January at UFC 246 in Las Vegas in a welterweight showdown with Cerrone. The UFC executive also said that the next Nurmagomedov title defense will face Tony Ferguson on April 18 in a cartel that is expected to take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
For Nurmagomedov, beating Ferguson is a difficult test despite obtaining 13 consecutive victories in possibly the deepest and most dangerous division of the sport. But if the champion retains his title, he seems to be looking back through the octagon at McGregor once more.
The UFC seems determined to put McGregor back in the cage with Nurmagomedov after his first fight ended as the best-selling vision pay of all time for the company.
Outside of Nurmagomedov’s rematch, McGregor is also interested in continuing a fight with BMF champion Jorge Masvidal, which is logical considering that the Irish superstar faces Cerrone in the welterweight instead of returning to a most natural weight of 155 pounds.
Masvidal competes in the welterweight and has said on numerous occasions that he would love to have the opportunity to face McGregor for the future. McGregor also seems to like that idea, but according to White, he first wants to avenge his defeat against Nurmagomedov.
