Philadelphia – A grandmother trying to rescue her grandchildren was killed when a fire broke out in a New Jersey home Friday morning, police confirmed. One of the grandchildren also passed away.

The baby was only about 10 months old, said Mercer County Attorney’s Office Fire Unit Chief Lt. Gary Wasko, adding that four people were in critical condition at a hospital.

The row house fire started a little before 4 a.m. in the 200 block of Woodlawn Avenue in Hamilton Township, causing a partial roof collapse. Wasko said six people were inside at the time.

Firefighters said several people were trapped and the rain hampered rescue efforts.

The Mercer County Attorney’s Office is leading the investigation.

The investigation into the fire is ongoing.
