Surface piercing: All information about surface piercing

The piercing is a surface piercing and is particularly popular in the neck, on the cleavage or on the clavicle. All the important information comes here.

Piercing – also called surface piercing – is pierced through the flat skin. Means: During “classic” piercings such as one Navel piercing are pierced through parts of the body that are curved outwards or inwards, the entry and exit holes for surface piercing are at the same height. Visually, the piercing looks like it is sitting on the skin.

By the way: Surface piercings are often confused with micro dermal piercings. The two piercings look similar, but there is a crucial difference between surface and micro dermal: the surface is pricked, while with micro dermal piercing a piece of skin is punched out and the piercing is inserted into the skin.

Surface piercing: which places are suitable?

A surface piercing can be pierced on many different parts of the body. Important: The skin must not be too thin at the selected location, otherwise the surface piercing can grow out quickly.

The most popular areas for surface piercing include the neck, chest area (décolleté), clavicle, abdomen or hip and face (usually diagonally next to the eye or ear). But especially on the clavicle and belly, you should be particularly careful. At these points, there is a risk that the surface piercing will be irritated by clothing or even accidentally torn out.

These areas are unsuitable for surface piercing

Parts of the body that are in motion or under tension and that are constantly exposed to external irritation are less suitable for surface piercing. This includes, for example, the wrist, fingers, arm, foot and the breech area. In such places, dermal anchor piercings are often a sensible alternative.

Let surface piercing pierce: the most important information

A surface piercing should only be stung in a professional piercing studio. Because piercing a surface piercing requires a lot of skill and experience.

If the piercing is stung too flat, it sits too loosely and grows out again quickly. If, on the other hand, it is pricked too deeply, the balls of the piercing press at the entry and exit points and thereby irritate the skin permanently. In addition, the correct distance between the puncture holes when piercing must be observed.

Because of these difficulties, surface piercing is not available in all piercing studios.

How painful is surface piercing?

When it comes to the pain of stinging, by the way, surface piercing is one of the less painful piercings. However, the intensity of the pain depends heavily on the area of the body and the pain sensation.

Surface piercing: everything for healing and proper care

Immediately after the lancing, the surface piercing is taped with a wound plaster for about a week, so that the jewelry can properly insert into the tissue and prevent accidental snagging.

A surface-piercing usually heals completely after two to four months. In some cases or depending on the placement, the healing of the surface piercing also takes longer. For a quick healing process you should pay attention to the following things after piercing:

1. Do not touch or play around with the piercing in the first few weeks after the lancing. If so, wash your hands and disinfect them beforehand.

2. Clean the piercing with wound disinfectant without alcohol.

3.In the first few weeks on blood-thinning medications such as Refrain from aspirin.

4. During the healing period, you should refrain from visiting the swimming pool, solarium and sauna as well as certain sports (ball sports, gymnastics, …).

5. Never remove the piercing.

6. Carefully clean any crusts that may develop with warm chamomile water.

The risks of surface piercing

Surface piercing had a rather bad reputation for a long time. This is because a surface piercing is under constant tension and is therefore not infrequently repelled by the body or even grows out sooner or later.

To prevent this from happening, the right jewelry and the right placement are extremely important for all surface piercings. If the surface piercing is not pierced deep enough, the piercing jewelry is too loose, the ends look too far out of the puncture hole and irritate the surrounding skin permanently. However, if it is too deep and tight, irritation and inflammation can also occur.

Another big risk with surface piercing is that the piercing of constant friction e.g. is exposed to clothing, which can also cause inflammation. On the other hand, it can even happen that the piercing is accidentally torn out if you get caught.

The right jewelry: This prevents the surface from growing out

Unfortunately, despite professional lancing and constant caution, it can happen that the surface piercing grows out at some point. The choice of piercing jewelry is crucial to prevent it from growing out.

So-called surface bars have been available for surface piercings for several years. Surface bars have the shape of a staple, which is bent vertically upwards by 90 degrees at both ends (only 45 ° depending on the body part). This means that the skin around the piercing point is less under tension, which in turn should prevent the surface from growing out.

Another advantage: the risk of getting caught on the piercing is lower here.

In contrast to other piercing jewelry, which can be changed as the mood takes you, the internal thread of the surface bars always remains in the stitching channel. The appearance of the jewelry can be changed by various balls and attachments that are screwed on.

Banana barbells are considered rather unsuitable jewelry for surface piercing. The screwed-on balls can cause pressure points on the skin and inflammation.

How much does a surface piercing cost?

How much you have to pay for a surface piercing cannot be said in general. Depending on where the piercing is pierced, the cost of the piercing is around 60 to 90 USD.

In addition to the lancing, the price usually includes the first jewelry and care products. It is best to ask in advance in the piercing studio of your choice how the costs are made up. There you can also ask directly whether the desired piercing point for the Surface is in question.
