5 things that make successful people different

Many people dream of success, but only a few succeed. However, there are a few general formulas that make your “success” project much more promising.

Almost everyone wants to be successful, but very few will. There are many reasons for that. Some don’t dare to make their dreams come true. Others think a lot about it, but just don’t get to act. Ultimately, the problems on the road to success are as diverse as the people that affect them.

The other way round, the path to success seems to be the same for most people – at least in its basic features. There are a few general formulas that successful people have revealed over time.

Become successful: 1. Think about what success looks like for you

Success is highly subjective. Greta Thunberg certainly defines success very differently than a VW lobbyist. Many people, therefore, make the mistake of adopting any general definition of success. When they reach their goals, they realize that it doesn’t feel like a success.

One example is the employee who has made it to the top in her company and now works overtime every day so that she rarely sees her children. Or the lawyer, who has a secure income but hates her job because she studied law only for the sake of her parents.

“Only those who know their destination will find the way.” – Laozi

To be really successful, you have to know what success means to yourself. That is probably the most important key to success. Because the probability that you hit a target that you don’t see is very low.

Imagine you had to hit a dartboard blindfolded. Even the darts world champion wouldn’t hit the Bull’s Eye like this. He doesn’t even know where the disc is hanging. It could be 360 degrees around it (in any direction!). The likelihood that he will shoot into the blue and then hit his target is negligible.

“To be successful requires two things: clear goals and a burning desire to achieve them.” – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Become successful: 2. You have to act

Another misconception that successful people don’t share is that success comes to you. The concept of visualization is often misunderstood.

Many people think that all they have to do is imagine how successful they are and believe that success will come, then they will be successful. Successful people know that this is not true.

Even Oprah Winfrey, one of the greatest advocates of visualization, says very clearly that only action leads to success.

“Do what you have to do until you can do what you want to do.” – Oprah Winfrey

Action is the only thing that brings you closer to your goal and thus to success. Someone who takes small steps is more likely to get there than someone who thinks about taking big steps.

You can’t become a bestselling author if you don’t write a book. You cannot build a successful business without starting a business. Even if you believe it so much.

Successful people know that their success is primarily due to their own actions. And they don’t just act once. You act again and again. Until the desired result occurs.

“Start with the necessary, then do the possible and suddenly you will do the impossible.” – Francis of Assisi

Become successful: 3. Don’t let problems unsettle you

It is often like this: you start something, keep hitting obstacles, and finally come to the conclusion that you can’t. This is usually not true. You just haven’t figured out how to do it. This does not mean that it is impossible.

“There are more people who surrender than those who fail.” – Henry Ford

Imagine you want to go shopping. A construction site is underway. So you won’t get to the supermarket via the usual route. Then you take a detour and get stuck in a traffic jam. When you finally arrive, you find that the supermarket is closed.

Would you give up now and say that it is impossible to shop? No of course not. You still need food. You may be annoyed for a moment, but then you just drive to another supermarket.

Strangely, when it comes to our dreams, we’re not that pragmatic. Most people then think that they have failed or that they attach importance to the obstacles. Suddenly it’s not just a problem, it’s a sign that it shouldn’t be.

Let’s come back to the supermarket example: You need toilet paper and the first supermarket doesn’t have anymore. Do you interpret this as a sign that you shouldn’t have toilet paper? Of course not. You drive to the second and third supermarkets until you get toilet paper.

Successful people are not discouraged by obstacles. They simply accept that problems are part of life. You solve it and carry on. If they don’t make it, they’ll find an alternative, but they won’t give up.

“Obstacles and difficulties are stages on which we climb.” – Friedrich Nietzsche

Become successful: 4. Invest in your success

There is a saying “You have to spend money to make money”. Translated this means that you have to spend money to earn some.

Companies are a good example of this. You have to invest money to start the company and then again so that it can grow. The whole concept of the show ‘The Lion’s Den’ is based on this principle. The founders have often invested large sums in their companies in order to be able to stand in front of the lions at all.

The saying can, however, be taken further in the figurative sense. Successful people know very well that they had to invest the money themselves, but also a lot of time. They have had to sacrifice evenings, weekends, vacations, and much more because their time has gone towards achieving their goals. But in the end, their sacrifices and efforts were rewarded with success.

“You have to be ready to do the things that others will never do, to have the things that others will never have.” – Les Brown

The wheat is often separated from the chaff at this point. Many people are even willing to invest a little bit in their success. But they avoid large investments for fear that they could fail. They are unwilling to take the risk and, for example, put a larger sum in their company or quit their jobs in order to fully work towards realizing their dreams.

However, successful people know that there is no way around success to avoid risk.

“Success depends on courage.” – Theodor Fontane

Become successful: 5. Put together a team

Another important factor that successful people know is their team. We need other people around us to help us succeed.

You need people to show you a different way when you are in a dead-end. Listening to and encouraging not to give up. That motivates us. With whom we can share our successes. Many also swear by a mentor. So someone who has already gone the way we want to go and who can help us.

In addition, the people with whom we surround ourselves have a great influence on us. Successful people, therefore, know that they have to be careful with who they are around.
