Miami police reported the arrest of a person charged with the stabbing murder of a 90-year-old man, which occurred last Tuesday in southwest Miami.
According to the authorities, a confidential informant called the police to tell them that he knew who had killed the old man, who was identified as Humberto Mijares, born on December 29, 1926.
The informant said that the suspect, who was identified as Silverio Fonte, a 56-year-old homeless man of Cuban origin, had confessed to the crime. The informant also said that Fonte was voluntarily admitting himself to the Mercy Hospitals crisis center.
Miami police detectives found the suspect at the hospital. The man had bloodstained shoes and the victim’s credit card in his possession.
The man was transported to the homicide offices where he confessed that he had gone to visit the victim on Tuesday afternoon, and before arriving they had both been drinking alcohol.
According to Fonte, at one point they began to argue, although he does not remember what, and the victim pointed a rifle at him and asked him to leave. The suspect said he threw the old man to the ground and disarmed him, then searched for a knife and stabbed him multiple times.
The report also indicates that on Wednesday morning the victim’s daughter went to verify that her father was okay after he called him on the phone several times and did not answer him, and found him dead and bleeding on the floor of the House.
A friend of the victim told authorities that the last time she had seen him was on Tuesday, around 6:00 p.m., and that he was accompanied by a man whom he described with Fonte’s address, of whom he also said that it looked dirty.
Fonte was arrested and faces charges of second-degree murder with a weapon.
