The Palm Beach sheriff’s office reported that the man, who they identified as Timothy J. Wall, 55, shot the 1-year-old boy and his grandmother inside the Publix, and later shot himself. There is no known relationship between the victims and the man.
According to the authorities, the man fatally shot the boy and his grandmother, and later took his own life.
The boy’s family, who would turn 2 the next month, and his grandmother invoked Marsy’s law and their names will not be released.
The reason why the man killed the victims is unknown and neither is there any relationship between them. However, the police said they are continuing the investigation.
The shooting caused panic among Publix customers and employees, who evacuated after hearing the shots.
“I was in the deli area when suddenly I saw an employee running, saying that someone was armed, and then I heard the shot. The employees took me to the back,” said Juan Guarda, a witness to what happened.
The Publix supermarket chain sent a statement saying that “our thoughts are with those affected by this tragedy. We are cooperating with the local police.”
During the afternoon, videos taken by people outside Publix, located in the 1100 block of Royal Palm Beach Boulevard, were revealed when authorities arrived.
Terri Barrera, a spokeswoman for the Palm Beach sheriff, said that upon arrival, police found the boy dead, as well as a woman and a man.
